Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain decisions from the official, following the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
